The Fugees’s legend Wyclef Jean calls Young Thug “Modern Tupac”

The Haitian rapper, former member of Fugees, Wyclef Jean recently spoke to Pigeons & Planes about his new solo project J’ouvert. The EP takes its name from the opening celebration of carnival in Haiti and will feature the Atlanta rap star Young Thug. The duo previously collaborated on a song called “Kanye West”, on Thug’s last album Jeffery.

During the interview Wyclef described how his initial collaboration with Young Thug came about, and touched on his similarities to the Atlanta rapper. “He’s from a project, I’m from a similar background,” Wyclef said. “And he has a natural love for Haiti, understanding the history of Haiti. Haiti is the first black republic. He reminded me of a modern Tupac, in a sense—in a revolutionary sense.” He also revealed a new side of Young Thug defining him “alike a sponge when it comes to history. He likes to absorb a lot of information, and actually wants to learn.”

Wyclef Jean’s J’ouvert EP is due out in November. Read the full interview here.
