Junior XL’s Spiral2 puts simple vocalising over the blend of UK beats, scuzzy guitar and detuned synthesizers previously established on Fervour Wharf (released on TT in 2018). Lyrically the release is introspective and prosaic – repeatedly addressing another person like a constant letter outwards. Junior’s voice appears plainly and unobscured with the instrumental alternating between clattering drums and chugging power chords.
The release is inspired by grunge and shoegaze albums that Junior rinsed during lockdown, as well as a deep love of Jersey, 2-step, Grime & Drill and as a result there is a strong current of urgency and spontaneity as well as something melancholic. This mix of influences is clear on the instrumental B side Real Scam where chordal sampler synths take over from the guitar and are chopped into oblivion by kicks and percussion.
Sprial2 takes an improvisational approach to vocal recording, with Junior hoping to personally document specific moments in time rather than capture a perfect take. Working through sounds and ideas that have been haunting Junior so as to “let them out” and be able to move on.
This release sits alongside Junior’s work in the duo Lol K and upcoming projects with baby___asl & Cold. Spiral2 is the sound of a heavily introspective time & a re-connection with earliest inspiration. Pre-Order it at: https://tobagotracks.bandcamp.com/album/spiral2
