Mechatok – Defective Holiday OST Review

Two years after All My Time ep, Mechatok’s Defective Holiday OST for Yegorka is out now as an eleven track album and a continuous mix, with Toxe‘s collaboration.

The single-player game, developed by Kim Laughton and available on Steam, consists of a virtual vacation to an undefined seaside destination in which the protagonist moves between the most disparate 3D settings, such as an aseptic airstrip for the unloading of exotic fruit, a paradise beach recalling Far Cry’s aesthetics, a tempietto erected in the most traditional locus amoenus ever designed and many other ordinary yet enigmatic places.

The project is pretty varied, yet still absolutely cohesive and coherent with itself. The main theme is Mechatok’s always gentle progressive trance, as is clear from “Agency Loop” or “CoCo Island”, although sometimes there is a slight detour toward more ambient or club-oriented vibes. Such is the case, on the one side, of “Discovery”, whose seagulls’ sounds and ground noises of water are layered together on a soft subtle beat, or, on the other side, “Uber Girl”, “Global DJ” and “Rescue Shot Bubibo”. The artistic research is accurate, indeed the music seems to seek purity of tone, alongside the refinement of specific sounds, as with the awesome floaty flutes in “Walk Freely” or the vocal pitch in “In The Seat” and, again, “Uber Girl”, first echoed and whispered, then vibrant and dynamic. The multilingual chain of voices is just sick.

The mix surely functions as the perfect soundtrack for the game, but it goes further than that. Not only is the production flawless and unique, which confirms Mechatok as one of the most interesting phenomena of today’s electronic scene, but also and above all it’s able to captivate the listener’s body and soul into its playful, surreal, ever-changing dimension, whether you’re playing or not.
