Sirens Scrapyard is a chronicle of the musical wealth of the current club scene: as so, it doesn’t fit easily into boxes and represents a variety of influences and styles, blending field-recording, apocalyptic soundtracks, and heavy dance-oriented club moments. If you’re looking for something to keep you engaged for a couple of hours while giving artists a hand, you should definitely give it a listen.
This compilation was conceived with a clearly social intent, as reported on the label’s Bandcamp page: “In an effort to give back to our community, which has been hit hard during Covid-19, over the past month, we’ve been collecting unreleased tracks from some of our favorite musical artists. ALL of the money raised through this purchase will go to the Artist Relief Project, which was created to help artists in need during Covid-19.”
Willing to be simultaneously both a portrait and a source of encouragement to not surrender to everyday struggles, Sirens Scrapyard entices you with a wide offering. Structurally divided in two large sections, this huge collection is characterized by a deep contrast between the two parts, with (A) being an ever-lasting hit-and-run between tense and relaxed atmospheres, dreamy orchestral compositions and shy field recordings, as well as choral and apocalyptic ones. The scenario of every track is well laid out and compositions live through a spiritual atmosphere, turning towards environmental suggestions. What unquestionably shines through the first collection though, is the sensation of anxiety and uncertainty that has taken a toll on mankind in this time.
On the contrary, in (B) we encounter tracks enriched by trance-flavored synths, pleasant and delicate melodies, ferocious drums and hot UK-bass bangers, representing several influences and approaches. This side of the record is powered by its club intent, trying to energize the atmosphere and provide reassurance instead. The rarefied and intangible atmospheres, which have a major role in (A), disappear in favor of a sweat-inducing pace, resulting in a well put together set of tracks, very close to dance floor dynamics. A light, hazy transition is the common thread which guides the listener from the first half of the record to the second one.
The final outcome is a collection that flows pleasurably, entering both mellow and harsh territories, always leaving the listener with food for thought. Given these premises, Sirens’ future cannot be anything but bright.
