Panda Bear – A Day With the Homies EP

A Day With the Homies EP

On January 12th, Panda Bear (Noah Lennox)—one of Animal Collective’s most active members—will release his first solo music since his 2015 masterpiece Meets the Grim Reaper.  He has described the upcoming five-track EP, A Day With the Homies, as “something without frills or much embellishment”, perhaps in contrast to his very densely produced previous LP.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Wrong Creatures

Wrong Creatures

San Francisco Noise Rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club will release their first album since 2013’s Specter at the Feast this January. In late 2017 they released four singles for this new record, which generally indicate a lean toward Heavy Blues Rock. Listen to “Little Thing Gone Wild”:

They Might Be Giants – I Like Fun

On January 19th, They Might Be Giants will release their 20th studio album, I Like Fun, coming less than two years since their last, Phone Power. It’s an Adult Rock album for them, and it looks to be a return to the more straightforward rock sound found on records like The Spine and Join Us. It was recorded in the same studio as their classic Flood. Listen to “I Left My Body” here:

Nightmares on Wax – Shape the Future

Shape the Future

English DJ and Electronic Producer Nightmares On Wax will release his first album in five years this January. Shape the Future’s singles imply that the producer will explore R&B and Trip Hop more thoroughly on the upcoming record. Watch the video for “Citizen Kane” here:

Nils Frahm – All Melody

All Melody

Acclaimed German Ambient Electronic producer Nils Frahm will release the double LP All Melody this month. The album is billed as a return to the basic German minimalist ambience on which Frahm has built his name—particularly with a focus on synth sound design, as opposed to percussive or sampled sound. Porches – The House

The House

American Indie Electronica act Porches will release their third album this January. They call this new record a “conscious effort in minimalism”—however, it features contributions by Alex G, Blood Orange, Chris Cody of Beach House, and many others. Ultimately, it looks to be an interesting follow-up to their 2016 breakthrough album Pool. Watch the video for “Find Me” here:

Tune-Yards – I can feel your creep into my private life

I can feel your creep into my private life

The Art-Pop duo Tune-Yards will release their first album since 2014’s critically acclaimed Nikki Nack this January. Merrill Garbus has said that the album explores the contrast between modern technology and sincerity, an idea that finds particular exploration on the single “Look at Your Hands”—wherein Garbus self-samples her vocals. Jonny Greenwood – Phantom Thread Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood scored the new Paul Thomas Anderson-directed film Phantom Thread, which was released on Christmas 2017. The score will be released January 12th. It features much more piano-heavy music by Greenwood, who, in the past, has made a name for himself because of his guitar playing and string arrangement. Listen to “House of Woodcock” here:
